Dr Inamdar’s Diet Plan
Dr. Inamdar’s
diet is pretty easy to follow, if you are committed to your health and fitness.
Which I was, having neglected both for as long as I can remember. No regular
exercise, no control or attention over the quality or quantity of food and drinks
(alcoholic and non) I was ingesting had had its toll on my body and health.
He wanted to
know if I had the commitment to getting healthier- physically, mentally,
emotionally – he confirmed that they were all connected. I had been working on
the mind and emotions for some time; I became serious about my physical fitness
last year (2016) and joined the Hyderabad Runners’ mentoring program for
runners/non-runners to get ready for the 5k run.
I was
excited because it was just what I was looking for – to kickstart my fitness
routine. I really enjoyed it and looked forward to waking up early, driving to
KBR park where the group met, stretched, and walk/ran for 30-40 minutes every
other day. Alas! On the third day, my
knee buckled under me and my ortho doctor/friend said, ‘No running on these
knees in their current state’ – prescribed exercises to strengthen the muscles
and gave me hope that I can do it …but not now!
I was going
down the victim way of ‘just when I decide to do something about my health, why
is this happening?’ But fortunately, didn’t dwell on it for long. Instead, I
decided to stay committed to my health and find another way.
Walking and
running were out. Yoga was an option. But I couldn’t sustain it. I get bored
alone.
What do I do
now?
Juicing
‘Juicing’
came into my life suddenly when Hari got hooked onto it and even bought a
juicer! For the first time, we were paying attention to what and how much we
were putting into our bodies. Hari went on a 5-day juicing option and lost 6 kgs!
(and looked healthier, happier, and dapper!). He’s written about it on his blog
That
inspired me to live on juice for one whole day (actually, it’s very tasty) and
then we continued by substituting one meal a day with juice. Started feeling
better and added cycling (stationery) to my regimen, in addition to the knee
strengthening exercises.
Overall,
better than doing nothing about my health. Lost a kg or so. Meanwhile got a
complete health checkup done as there were other niggling issues and was at the
pre-menopausal stage. Took some prescribed supplements.
Coincidence or the perfect time had
come?
Then on my
summer visit to Pune, Dr. Inamdar’s trip to Pune coincided with mine, for the
first time! I was resistant, as I usually am, but I was desperate to do
something for my body and health. So, I pushed through my resistance and asked
my cousin to ask if he would meet me. And he gave me an appointment the same
day… no way out now!
So, I
decided to visit him with my list of grievances- obvious and not so obvious
ones.
The obvious ones – obesity, bad skin, arthritic legs(bows), painful
wincing with movement and so on.
Not obvious
ones – hormonal changes, various deficiencies, high cholesterol, knee pain,
digestive problems, lack of motivation and mojo and so on...
He was very
gracious, talking for a long time about various aspects of life and health,
probably also assessing my awareness and commitment levels to my health; and only
when I said, “I am ready to do whatever it takes – including swallowing bitter
pills/powders” (I knew that my cousin was taking some of those)- that he went
on to checking my ‘naadi’ and then did a physical exam to confirm some of the
diagnoses I think.
The
diagnosis was clear- osteoarthritis, hormonal imbalance, slow metabolism etc.
He said he would treat me for all of the above and of course for obesity as it
was a major aggravator of all the above problems.
I sent him
my test reports (which were at Hyderabad), and he sent me the prescription for
the daily supplements, a few packets of ayurvedic medicines (pills and powder)
and a prescribed diet chart (what to eat and drink and when)- and what not to
eat or drink. This was to be followed for the duration of the treatment – 6 months.
I
transferred the money and set out to get healthier.
Kokum extract
I found at Big basket (I think the one’s in Pune are better) and I was ready to
start.
Lots of
water in the morning with kokum. Egg whites, sprouts, salads, rice, dal, grains,
veggies, greens, nuts.
No meat,
dairy, peanuts, sugar…
And a 4km brisk
walk. Stretches.
I followed
the diet, pretty tasty, filling, so easy to follow.
Walking, I haven’t
been doing; Instead, I’ve been cycling.
The Result
It’s been a
month and a half and I’ve been cheating on and off – especially with milk and
sugar in my tea- I’ve lost 5 kgs. and feeling lighter and my skin eruptions have
gone.
I suspect
with all the water and kokum, a kidney stone got flushed out as well.
I am still
motivated to continue with the diet (with some exceptions!) and hope to walk at
least once a week starting this week.
Thank you
Dr. Inamdar.
Also, a note
of appreciation to myself – for doing this for myself. I’m loving it.
I still have
a long way to go and may uncover many more latent body-issues, but I’m ready
for them.
